In TurboTax 2025 I am unable to enter additional higher education expenses, including Room and Board, to offset qualified withdrawals from a 529 account. Without this option, I will be taxed on 529 withdrawals that should NOT be taxed! This option has been present in TurboTax Deluxe for multiple years past.
Do I need to request a refund from Intuit and purchase another tax preparation program?
Below is a redacted screenshot from TurboTax Deluxe 2024 showing when we were able to enter this data:

You can't enter room & board expenses yet. This is a known glitch in TurboTax (TT). They are working on it (no announced fix date). The 2025 education and 529 sections appear totally redesigned, from last year.

Thank you for the quick reply!
I now see that numerous persons have started multiple forum threads that are echoing my exact same issue.
Hopefully Intuit will promptly address this obvious oversight.
I’m used to TurboTax but won’t hesitate to transition my patronage to another online tax-filing software platform if they don’t address this error.
Have a great day and thanks again!
Please provide an update. I just downloaded newest SW (Desktop Version) and it still isn't working. If it is fixed please provide an update on how to get to sheet to input other expenses
We have been told the update will be coming out this weekend, expected Friday night.
still unable to enter college educational expenses that correspond to my 529 withdrawals. There's been several updates this weekend but as of Monday night 3/2/26 still nothing. If you attempt to file it tells you there's an error and you should wait to file till there's an update. I reached out to TT and they said if you edit the dependent to say he's a college and high school student the box to enter expenses opens up. Which it does, as it did for my high school daughter. But of course my son is not in high school so I don't want to account for the expenses that way...so still waiting to file due to this glitch....please fix ASAP
Are you using a PC or a MAC? Did you do the latest update? The program has been updated and is allowing users to enter educational expenses that are related to the 529 withdrawals.
If you are using a MAC, then first enter your 1099-Q, then go to the 1098-T section and select "has education expenses other than tuition" which is a few screens in after you answer a couple of questions about your dependent. On the next screen you will be given the opportunity to enter all of the other expenses you used the 529 for.
I see that I can enter the expenses but this is what I am getting when I run smart check-
"Information Worksheet : Form 1099-Q - This state return is to yet ready to file. The federal return contains the following situation which requires an additional update to this state: You are filling a Form 1099-Q distribution from a 529 plan with expanded qualified education expenses on your federal return. The state calculations have not been fully updated yet to reflect these changes. We are actively working on updating the state impact and will make those updates available as soon as possible."
So as of tonight March 3 2026 I am still unable to file taxes...
Which state are you in?
Oregon
We expect an update for the1099-Q, hopefully tonight. Please check back tomorrow to see if the issue is resolved. OR has also been experiencing some issues according to news sources; but, I don't fully trust the news. Let's hope it works for you tomorrow.
Did the update and unfortunately I still get the error message. It has changed somewhat as now it wants me to enter information on my daughter?? But after that it tells me the same thing that you are still working to fix the issue…3/5/26
