Turbo tax is not applying the excess 1098-T scholarship money to my total income on line one of the tax return. Why is it not applying that income?

I have a few thousand dollars of excess income not used for education expenses in my scholarship.

New for 2022: taxable scholarship goes on line 8r of Schedule 1, rather than on line 1 of form 1040, with the SCH notation.

Why does entering these values in TurboTax not then adjust my return amount to be less than before I entered the info? I've triple checked I've entered all the values correctly, but my return still shows the same value as before I entered the scholarship information. The return value should drop by a large about if I'm stating my taxable income increases by several thousand dollars.

Don't go by the "refund meter" at the top of the page.  Sometimes there's a delay in the calculations. Verify that the amount got to line 8r on Schedule 1 and then to line 8 of form 1040.
