Should I add a letter that got from school? It’s says the total amount paid for tuition and smock for the year 2023 is then the amount I paid.

Did you not receive a 1098-T form from your school with his same information?

Q. Should I add a letter that got from school?

A. No.  Attachments to you return prevent e-filing. They delay the processing of your return and the IRS basically ignores them in situations where attachments aren't normal (like claiming education credits).  Save the proof for later, if and when you are "audited".

What is "smock"? Uniforms are only a qualified educational expense if classified as "course materials required for attendance".

ok so just leave it out. I just didn’t know what to do with that letter, since I got no form with it. The smock  would be the cape they make you buy for the cosmetology barber it’s called a smock.

To be eligible for the tuition credits, the course must be taken at "an eligible institution". The school should be able to tell you if it is an eligible educational institution. In general, an eligible educational institution is an accredited college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution, including accredited, public, nonprofit, and proprietary (privately-owned, profit-making) postsecondary institutions. Additionally, in order to be an eligible educational institution, the school must be eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the Department of Education. If they don't issue a 1098-T they are probably not an eligible institution.

Many schools no longer mail out the 1098-T.  You obtain it from your school account, on line.

Enter your school at the link below, to see if it's on the dept. of education list.
