Scholarship/Grant money used to pay for housing after school tuition is being displayed as additional income for 2018? This is increasing our return drastically? It's not supposed to be considered as income.

Scholarship money is indeed taxable if not used for eligible expenses.  Room and board, or housing are not eligible expense.  The student, however, is the one who should be filing a return to claim this taxable scholarship income, even if the student is claimed as a dependent on a parent's return and the parent is claiming everything else on the 1098-T
