EDUCATION EXPENSES
Education expenses for grades K-12 are not deductible on your Federal return, whether for private, public, or home schooling, nor are the expenses for tutoring, after school lessons or after school activities, such as dance lessons, sports, etc. Some states allow deductions/credits for K-12 education and/or home schooling expenses; if your state has these deductions available, you will be prompted to enter them when you prepare your state return. (As far as I know, the states that offer any sort of K-12 deductions/credits are Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin)
To clarify,
Are these elementary schools or higher education?
What are you trying to apply the expenses towards, a credit or withdrawal of some sort?
Is this for the Federal or State return?
Do have Form 1098-T and if yes, how many?
@Samanthaharl
Elementary schools in Illinois. Turbo tax asked for the information regarding a deduction. Federal. No 1098-T
I am in Illinois and I was prompted to enter the info but there is only room for one school. I have 2 school in 2025 for my son. One was the end of one school year at a catholic school and one at a public. I don’t see how I can enter 2 different schools.
You misunderstood. You do not get a 1098T for K-12 education. Colleges send 1098T's to college students. There is no place for you to enter anything about K-12 on your federal return. When you prepare your state return you can enter information about your child's school expenses if you are in one of the states with an education credit. In your case that will be on your IL tax return.
Ok so same question for the state taxes then (I must have looked at the wrong one). On turbo tax there is only one spot to put one school. I have 2 schools. How do I put both in? It asks the name of the school, the grade and if it is private or public. My son was in 3rd grade and 4th grade in 2025. In 2 different schools. One public and one catholic. I am trying to figure out how to put in both.
Let's ask another Champ who may be helpful with IL school credits.
@Mike9241 This user wants to enter two schools for the same tax year on an IL return---can that be done?
I use the desktop app. In some cases, the online app works differently, but this is what I did
I entered the info for the "first" student. Once done, at the bottom, there is a blue link to "add another student". That's what you click on to repeat the same or add a different child with a different grade or school
Repeat as needed.
In some cases, due to screen resolution, you may have to scroll down to see the link
