1098-T / Bug in software

Turbotax isn't allowing me to enter my daughter's 1098-T information.  It bypasses that screen, then tells me I entered $0 as her tuition expenses.

Here's how to edit the 1098-T in TurboTax:

From Deductions & Credits

Expenses and Scholarships (form 1098-T) hit Update

From the page that says Now Let's Gather The Additional Education Expenses

Hit Continue. You will need to continue through several screens until you get to the screen that says Your Education Expenses Summary click Edit

At Here's Your Education Summary you can Edit, Delete or Add New School

1098-T / Bug in software

You have a bug in your 2019 software - PLEASE UPDATE ASAP.  I have tried to find the  place to enter 1098-T Tuition Amount and Turbo Tax says "you entered this amount elsewhere"  Where is elsewhere??  I followed the instructions to jump to 1098-T and Turbo Tax does NOT give me the option to enter box 1 amount for tuition or box 8 Scholarship information. It seems like TT is missing the page to input 1098-T information.   The bug in your software is very frustrating because TT is saying that my son's scholarships are taxable because there is no place to enter tuition amounts.   I need to finish preparing my return and 1098-T is the only information I have left to enter.  HELP!!

1098-T / Bug in software

I followed the instructions you provided several times and no luck.  I need to know where to enter the tuition I paid as reflected in Box 1 of the 1098-T.  Turbo Tax is missing that section... .  It only asks for ESA and 529 qualified tuition -1099-Q.  Help

I do apologize for the repeated instructions.

Try this and see if this helps.  I understand some steps may be repetitive but it should fix whatever is going on and let you proceed with your return.

  1. Go to the input section for the 1098-T.
  2. You will probably skip to the section titled books and supplies.  Just continue as you probably will not be able to enter any information here.  Just continue through the screen.
  3. Do Not enter any scholarship amounts when it asks if the scholarship is listed in Box 5 of the 1098-T.  We want to avoid potentially doubling up any input already made.  Hit continue instead.
  4. Continue through all the screens.
  5. You may get a message which says you can't maximize because there are no expenses.  Just select continue until it takes you back to the Wages & Income screen.
  6. Now, Go back into the "Education Credit" section.
  7. Select "Edit" next to the student.
  8. It will ask you if you had an education credit and show you the summary.
  9. Select "Edit" to the right of Tuition.
  10. It will ask you if you received a 1098-T.  Select Yes and continue.
  11. The next page should show you your input on the 1098-T.
  12. Continue through the screens

This should eventually take you to the screen showing which deduction you can take.

Credit

After you pass this screen, run a review.  The issue should resolve itself allowing you to input your 1098-T information.

@jam2020, what is the issue now?  Have you tried any of the instructions from above?  If you are still stuck, please delete what you have entered by following these steps:

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • To your left, Select Tax Tools/drop-down menu
  • Select Tools
  • Under Other helpful links, choose to Delete a form
  • Select Delete next to Form 1098-T / 8863 / 8917 and Continue with My Return to proceed

Then re-enter your Form 1098-T thru this path:

  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
  • Select Jump to 1098t
  • On the screen, Now Let's gather XYZ's Additional Education Expenses
  • Follow prompts
  • Next screen, Your Education Expenses Summary, select Edit
  • Next screen Here's Your Education Summary, under Tuition, select Edit to enter tuition information
  • See the images below.@jam2020

1098-T / Bug in software

Thanks for the work-around it worked.  But you really need to report this and fix this BUG.   When entering the information initially, there is a bug as it jumps right past and never prompts for any information related to1098-T or tuition, and simply says the tuition is $0.

This needs to be fixed!
