My parents have claimed me the past 4 years and claimed the American Opportunity Credit each time. If they don't claim me on their taxes for 2018, can I claim the credit?

No, you will not qualify for the American Opportunity Credit this year. This education credit is cannot be claimed for more than four years. If you are filing you're as a nondependent taxpayer this year then you may qualify to claim the Lifetime Learning Credit.

Please view the IRS education credit comparison chart to view the requirements for claiming the Lifetime Learning Credit and the American Opportunity Credit.
