My Federal and State returns have been accepted.I just received my 1098T & I'd like to see if the $6771 in qualified tuition expense would change my filing.

Do not change anything on your return until the IRS fully processes your return and sends the original refund ... only then should you click on the Amendment process ( which will not be working until Feb sometime anyway).  Then if it makes a difference you can mail in the amended return or not.

Can you be or are you claimed as a dependent by someone else? If so, they are the one who can claim the education credit on their tax return.

No.  I am the father of the student and I'm claiming her as a dependent.  The 1098T is from her college tuition; this is her first year and I didn't know college tuition was deductible.

What confused me was you said "my 1098-T" It doesn't change the answer provided by Cretter#2. You are the one who claims the American Opportunity Credit for your dependent. There are a number of requirements to qualify and TurboTax will walk you through them. You can claim up to $4000 of qualified education expenses for tuition and fees, books, and equipment paid out of pocket or with loans. It doesn't matter who paid them or whose name the loan is in. Credit is reduced if modified AGI is between $80,000 and $90,000 ($160,000 and $180,000 if MFJ) and eliminated above the top amounts.

Ok.  My AGI was 175,304, taxable income was $157,304. I took the standard Head of Household deduction of $18,000. if I understand your comment I won't qualify for a deduction anyway and this is what I wanted to know. TY
