My daughter filed her own tax return, how do I claim her college tuition?

My daughter made approximatley $10000 last year and filed her own tax return, but I paid over $20000 for her college.  Can I claim that on my return if she filed her own return?

For the educational credits ( American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits) -

Expenses paid by you. If you claim an exemption for your daughter who is an eligible student, only you can include any expenses you paid when figuring the amount of the educational credit. If neither you nor anyone else claims an exemption for her, only she can include any expenses you paid on her taxes when figuring the credit.

For tuition and fees deductions-

If you claim your daughter as your dependent, and you paid the expenses, you can claim.

If you do not claim your daughter as your dependent, and you paid the expenses, no one is allowed to claim.
