Q. Are they considered full time students if they are in elementary school?
A. No.
Full time student status is only relevant for dependents over age 18.
There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and Other ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test.
A child of a taxpayer can still be a “Qualifying Child” (QC) dependent, regardless of his/her income, if:
If they are under the age of 19, they do not have to be a fulltime student to qualify as a dependent. Can you provide insight on the error?
This is the error message:
| Person on the Retun Worksheet (child name): Enrollmentstatus must be entered. |
I removed my child's name from the above for privacy. I did delete both kids this morning and re-entered them as dependents and it remove the error on my oldest but I still get this on my youngest. Both are marked as elementary students in TT. They both do have 1099-Q documents related to them for private (elementary) school tuition for which we run their tuition money thru for the state tax deduction. When I look at the TT worksheets the enrollment questions seem to pertain to college students not elementary students, but when I go to "fix" the error TT doesn't take me to any of the questions to answer to try and resolve the issue. I also can't submit my forms electronically as this error seems to be blocking my ability to submit even though it seems to be an issue with the backup worksheet and not an actual tax form itself. I have verified everything is entered correctly and my tax situation (private school and using 529 funds) hasn't changed from last year and I didn't have this same issue last year with TT online.
I'm getting this error:
This is the error message:
| Person on the Retun Worksheet (child name): Enrollmentstatus must be entered. |
Child's name is removed for privacy. My kids are elementary age and I checked that as much during the 1099-Q entry since their private school tuition is run thru their 529s for state tax deduction purposes. This seems like a college related question but it's applying to my elementary age kids for no reason. I haven't had these issues in the past using TT so it seems to be a software glitch. My issue is that I can't file electronically with this error but TT also doesn't take me to anywhere in the questions to fix it; form view is also not available on TT online so I'm unsure how to get around this error or what questions to answer/steps to take to fix this error.
I'm having the same issue. Please help because it says the "People wks" for these children is not complete but there's nothing I can update to correct the error. I've looked in the "Dependent wks" and toggled the "Is this person a Full Time student" but that doesn't fix the error either. As the poster mentioned, this error is preventing me from e-filing! Please provide guidance. Thanks
There is definitely a TT coding error for elementary students (not sure if this happens for high school too because mine aren't that age yet). After messing with my taxes in TT online for the last 3 days I changed both of my kids to college students and answered all of the questions for a college student (basically no to everything). This then populated the "Part II - College Student Information" of the Student Information Worksheet which is marked "keep for your records". I'm 99% sure that section was causing the error for my elementary kids so there is definitely a coding issue for 2025 that didn't exist in prior TT online years.
Once I saved them as a college student, I went back into the questions and re-marked them as elementary students and all of the questions in the section aforementioned are marked "No" except #7 "Is the student an eligible dependent of the tax payer?" and that one is marked yes. I don't know how to get those questions to be "N/A" which would be more applicable to elementary students, however, it did resolve the error for me and I can now e-file. Flipping my kids to college and then back to elementary didn't change my federal or state refund/amount due. Hopefully since this is a backup worksheet I didn't mess anything else up with my taxes but this error certainly needs to be resolved by TT's coding of these forms.
Same is happening to me. I actually just removed the 1099-Q and anything having to do with the 529 and I am still looping on this error.
The error seems to have to do with the checkbox for "was this person a student in during 2025?" in the People wks for my dependents. Those checkboxes cannot be toggled. When I go to my personal People Wks and toggle that same value to "Yes" I get the same "Not done" flag on that form. I have no clue which form would let me toggle it off for my kids to see if that would fix it (Dependent Wks, Student Info Wk, and People Wks can't change it). This is infuriating.
