My wife took a class last year, but we paid for it the year before. Do we still enter that she was in school? Don't believe we will get a 1098 form

If you didn't pay for tuition in 2016, then you will not receive a 1098-T and thus you won't qualify for any education tax breaks (unless you paid interest on student loans).
I recommend answering "no" to the "was anyone a student" question.
