You must go through answering the questions in the education section. Please review your tax forms. You will see Form 8863 with education expenses or you may have taxable income from a scholarship. There are many variations and you need to be sure that your forms are completely filled in and showing correctly on your return.

To see your forms:

Edit you education section to be sure it is complete.

I uploaded my school 1098 for expenses and turbo tax said it will file it for me. Is that correct? Do I need to do anything else?

Q. I uploaded my school 1098 for expenses and turbo tax (TT) said it will file it for me. Is that correct?

A.  No.  A 1098-T does not get "filed". It is an informational document, that TT uses to calculate an education credit for you (unless your parent claims you as a dependent) or it calculates whether you have taxable scholarship to report.

Q. Do I need to do anything else?

A. Yes. You need to have some idea of what the output in TT should be; then check the forms to verify what that output is.

If you are not eligible for a tuition credit and you know that none of your scholarship is  taxable (usually box 1 is more than box 5), you do not need to enter the 1098-T at all.
