I turned 24 on 12/31 and am trying to fill my 1098-t form. I’m not getting anything back from any of my education expenses. What can I do to get a return from this?

I’m not a dependent, living on my own paying for and apartment and living costs with school funding in a doctorate program.

The only credit you can claim is Lifetime Learning Credit and the only qualified expense is tuition. If your school funding exceeded your tuition you won’t get any credit unless you claim any grants as income and report that you paid tuition out of your own funds.

Grad students are not eligible for the more generous (and partially refundable) American Opportunity Credit.
