I received full tuition remission for my last year in undergrad due to my mom's employment benefits. My 1098 has nothing in box 1 but $18k in box 5, why am I taxed?

I thought tuition remission for undergraduate tuition was tax exempt?

It is exempt, but if the school reported it in Box 5, it should have also reported in in Box 1.

Click the "What if this is not what I paid?" link under Box 1 on the 1098T screen. Enter the amount of Box 5 that was used for tuition.
