I received a 1098T in my college son's name, a 1099Q in my name and social for same college son, and a 1099Q in my same college son's name and social. I plan to take

the American Opportunity Credit. I also used a 529 plan to pay for all of his qualified education expenses. I know I need to put 1098T and my 1099Q on my return but what about his 1099Q? He has nothing else but that. FYI I did do a return for him and he own $447 in taxes but when I put his 1099Q on my return it just reduced my refund by $7. It seems to me something is not right. Please advise.

The TurboTax (TT)  interview is complicated and mistakes are easy to make.  In many cases, the 1099-Q can just be left off. But it depends on the numbers.

Provide the following info for more specific help:

  • Is the  student  the parent's dependent.
  • Box 1 of the 1098-T
  • box 5 of the 1098-T
  • Any other scholarships not shown in box 5
  • Does box 5 include any of the 529/ESA plan payments (it should not)
  • Is any of the Scholarship restricted; i.e. it must be used for tuition
  • Box 1 of the parent 1099-Q
  • Box 2 of the parent  1099-Q
  • Box 1 of the student 1099-Q
  • Box 2 of the student  1099-Q
  • Room & board paid. If student lives off campus, what is school's R&B on campus charge. If he lives at home, the school’s R&B “allowance for cost of attendance” for student living with parents.
  • Other qualified expenses not included in box 1 of the 1098-T, e.g. books & computers
  • How much taxable income does the student have, from what sources
  • Are you trying to claim the tuition credit (are you eligible)?
  • Is the student an undergrad or grad student?
  • Is the student a degree candidate attending school half time or more?
