I paid for part of my dependent daughter's college tuition in 2016, but it appears I don't qualify to take any deduction for those education expenses as apparently there is an maximum income limit- how do I know what that max-income amount is?

Education credits/deductions are phased out at the following modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) levels and filing status:

American Opportunity credit (AOC)

  • Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) - $160,000-$180,000
  • Single, Head of Household or Qualified Widow -  $80,000-$90,000
  • Married Filing Separately (MFS) - Do not qualify


Lifetime Learning Credit 

  • MFJ - $111,000-$131,000
  • Single, etc - $55,000-$65,000
  • Married Filing Separately (MFS) - Do not qualify

Student Loan Interest Deduction

  • MFJ - $130,000 - $160,000
  • Single, etc. - $65,000 - 80,000 
  • MFS - Do not qualify


Tuition and Fees Deduction - Not allowed if MAGI exceeds:

  • MFJ - $160,000
  • Single, etc. - $80,000 
  • MFS - Do not qualify
