You cannot get the child tax credit for a child who was over the age of 16 at the end of 2019,  You lose the child tax credit in the year the child turns 17.  And you do not get stimulus money for a child who was over 16 at the end of 2019.

Look at your Form 1040--if you claimed your teenager as a your dependent you should have received the $500 credit for other dependents for him instead of the child tax credit.   The credit is on line 13a.

A child must be under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year in order to get the child tax credit. If you claimed your son as a dependent on your tax return, he should have qualified you for an other dependent credit of $500. Are you saying you didn't get the other dependent credit?

If you do not get the stimulus payment for your son this year, you can claim it on your 2020 tax return which you file in early 2021 since it is actually an advance on a 2020 credit.

There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and standard ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test. Only a QC qualifies a taxpayer for the Earned Income Credit. They are interrelated but the rules are different for each.

The support test is different for each type. The support test, for a QC, is only that the child didn't provide more than half his own support. The support test for a Qualifying Relative is that the taxpayer provided more than half the relative's support.

A child must be under age 19 at the end of the year, or a full time student under age 24, to be a QC.  Turning 19 in Sept does not get you partial credit
