I'm a college student doing my taxes and I'm trying to figure out my work-study income. I do not live in the state I go to school in. Why do I have to send in my W2?

If you are filing your own return as a non-dependent, you can claim Education Expenses you paid on your return, along with  your work-study income.

If your parents claim you as their dependent, and claim your education expenses on their return,  you are not required to file a return unless your income is over $12,000, or you want a refund of taxes you paid on your W-2.
