I'm 22 y/o & was a full time student for one semester during the 2016 tax year before graduating in May.Am I eligible to claim the American Opportunity tax credit?

Just want to make sure I am definitely eligible to claim the American Opportunity Credit to avoid any possible issues..... I was a full-time student for one semester during 2016 before graduating in May. Since I completed my degree during the tax year I am eligible to claim....correct??

If you can be claimed as a dependent by your parents, then they would be the ones who could claim the American Opportunity Credit on their tax return if you are still eligible for it. It can be claimed if you are only in school for part of the year.

The credit can be claimed for you for up to 4 tax years. If it has already been claimed in 4 tax years, it can't be claimed again. If your qualified education expenses for the first term in 2016 were paid in 2015, then they should have been claimed on your or your parents 2015 tax return for the credit.

If your expenses can't claimed for the American Opportunity Credit, you might qualify for the tuition and fees deduction or the Lifetime Learning Credit.

I believe I can be since I was a full-time student for part of the year. I started my full-time job in mid-October so my parents supported me for most of the year.
