It doesn't work quite that way. The total distribution can be applied to the education credits. If only part of the distribution is used, the percentage of earings for the taxable portion is taxed.

After you enter the 1099-Q (first) and 1098-T continue through all the education interviews and click "Maximize My Education Tax Break"

I am adding a 1098-T for 1child. The Desktop version says: We currently don't support education expenses for more than 13 people. How can I work around that? It is 1child
