I don't qualify for American opportunity or Lifetime yet I don't fit the most common reasons why. why can't I claim some of my college expenses?

The Lifetime Learning Credit is a non-refundable credit which means you would have to have a tax liability for the credit to reduce in order to see any benefit from this credit.  If your income is $6,350, you do not have any taxable income, therefore you have no tax liability so you would not qualify for the Lifetime Credit for that reason.

The Tuition and Fees Deduction will only decrease your AGI which will again only decrease your Taxable Income.  Taxable Income cannot be decreased to below $0.  Again, you have no taxable income so you would not be able to take this deduction.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is only available in the first 4 years of higher education.  Other reasons you would not be able to claim the AOTC would be

  • You marked that you could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return
  • You marked yes to having a conviction for possession or distribution of a controlled substance
  • You marked No you were enrolled at least half-time
  • Your Scholarship or Employer-Provided Assistance was equal to or exceeded your tuition and qualified

Based on the information you are providing (without the education expense numbers) you could qualify for the AOTC. If none of the above apply then you should go back through and re-answer all of the questions for the 1098-T.   You can either delete the 1098-T by clicking Delete and then re-entering everything or you can go through and just check your answers. You can also go back through and check your answers in your My Info section.
