I am required by my graduate program to join the student association related to my field, but had to may dues personally. Can I count this as a deduction?

I am required by my graduate program to join the student association related to my field, but had to may dues personally. Can I count this as a deduction?
The student association fees can be counted as qualified education expenses for the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit and you can claim them if you claim these education credits.
