Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I am preparing my son's and his wife's taxes. She was a student the first half of 2018. The 1098-T she received has an amount in Box 6 only. What do I need to do?

When I entered this into Turbo Tax it has no impact on their refund amount.  I researching this I keep coming up with needing to prepare an amended return for the previous year.  However, Turbo Tax does not say anything about needing to file an amended return.

You don't need to do anything. Box 6 is for a reduction in scholarships or grants for a prior year. So, in 2017, she probably had a scholarship or grant that was reduced or not used for some reason.

The only need for an amendment would be if, in 2017, she was not allowed to take a credit because some or all of her expenses were covered by scholarships and grants. If those were reduced and she really did pay out of pocket, she could be eligible for education credits.

Box 6 has no bearing on the 2018 tax year.
