I am not sure if I should file jointly or separately. I know that my husband will have his returns taken for student loans and hospital debt.

For a married couple to file MFS is the absolute worst way to file. Even if one filer has a lien on their tax return. File joint, and include the injured/innocent spouse form with your filing. This will exempt the portion of the refund for the non-liable partner from being taken for the debt of the liable partner.

The injured/innocent spouse form is included in all versions of the TurboTax program. It's under the "Other Tax Situations" tab, all the way at the bottom in the "Miscellaneous Tax Forms" section. You'll see it listed there clearly marked.
