I am a student and I did not submit my taxes last year (but I have in years past), how will that effect my 2018 taxes?

My dad claimed me on his taxes in 2017, so I did not complete my own taxes because I knew I would not owe any money. My dad will be claiming me again this year on his 2018 taxes, but I do plan to do my own taxes this year too. Will I need to somehow file my 2017 taxes late before doing my 2018 taxes, or can I just do my 2018 taxes without looking back?

You can do your 2018 taxes without having done a 2017 tax return. Make sure you check the box that you can be claimed by someone else.

If you have a refund coming to you on the 2017 return you only have until 4/15/21 to file and get it ... after that you forfeit the refund.

Not the total picture , but if someone claims you as a dependent, you will not be able to claim yourself on a return that you file.
