Definitely not a scholarship, and also definitely wasn't used for "qualified" education expenses. But congrats on the new baby! I see this as a gift. Gifts are not taxable or reportable by the recipient of said gift on any tax return. If the child was born in 2016, then when filling in their information in the Dependents section under the Personal Info tab, make sure you select that the baby lived with you "the whole year". Even if born on new year's eve, the IRS says you get to claim them for the entire year. Nice!
