You're not eligible because you are a dependent.  Neither you nor your parents get the 2020 stimulus ($1200 + $600) for you. Dependents over 16 were not eligible.  Your parents should get the 2021 stimulus ($1400) for you, as the dependent qualification rules changed.

If you can be claimed as a dependent then you are not eligible to get the stimulus payment for yourself. Please see How will the third stimulus impact me? and  Who can I claim as my dependent? for additional information.

Hi!

Is this the case if I tick both boxes in TurboTax, the first being a) can be claimed, and b) won't  be claimed?

I am trying to do my niece's taxes, but she lives with her great grandmother who has evidently not filed for years. The grandma only has Social Security for retirement income, so wasn't required to file, and it would take a herculean effort to get her to understand that this year she would need to in order t be able to claim the stimulus payment (EIP3), along with the American Opportunity education credit.  My niece is a college student, only 20 so not emancipated, and I don't want to hurt her with her school financial aid, but I am also hoping to get the EIP3 for her via some sort of bypass to the usual dependent payment and education credit refund  being paid out by the IRS as part of the legal guardian's household.

Thank you so much for taking the time and making the effort to help people here!  It is greatly appreciated!
