I am stuck on the section that asks if I have ever claimed the american opportunity tax credit. This is my first year filing taxes, previously my Grandmother filed for my family, and I have no idea what to enter. when i asked my grandmother she believes it was claimed at some point but we have no documentation to confirm this or tell us what years it was claimed. how should I proceed with this section?

If you have not completed four years of post secondary education then you are still able to claim it. However, you will need to obtain prior year taxes in order to see exactly how many years it was claimed for you.
If you can’t find one of your old tax returns, there’s no reason to worry. The IRS can provide you with a copy of it if you prepare Form 4506. The IRS keeps copies of all returns you file for at least seven years. However, if the tax return you want is older than this, there’s a possibility it may not be available.
