How do I know if I claimed the american opportunity credit the previous year for the first time by looking at last years 8863 form?

I am looking at Form 8863, but I am unsure if it claimed it last year for the first time or not. How do I tell?

Looking at form 8863 from 2017, if line 8 has a number, then you have claimed the American Opportunity credit in 2017.
