Hi, I recently moved from CA to NY for a two-year masters degree. I am unsure if I will stay after the two years at this stage. My mailing address is set to CA, at my parents’ residence, where I sometimes stay when I visit. Questions I have:
- Am I considered a resident of NY by going to school here? Granted I do plan on taking on freelance work while I’m here to help pay for living expenses. Also, I brought my car from CA. If I’m considered a resident of NY, I’m supposed to register it in NY within 30 days.
- If I’m not considered a resident of NY, does that mean I DON’T have to change my CA driver license to NY? And therefore, I can keep my car registered in CA but drive in legally in NY?
- Again, if I’m considered a CA resident during the two years I’m in NY, do I just file out-of-state taxes in addition to my home state taxes for what I earn in NY?
