College Tuition/Fees & Scholarship 1098-T form

I entered all info from 1098-T scholarship form. When I get to the final screen, it lists the amount from Box 5 of the 1098-T as the total amount of tuition/fees (but on 1098-T form Box 5 is listed as scholarships or grants) and it doesn't allow editing (it is in blue). We paid out of pocket tuition/fees that I need to add.  How can I get that in (if I can't, it will list as taxable income, when it is not taxable).

  1. Go back to where you entered the Educational information and go to a page that says Your Education Expense Summary and select edit next to the student's name.
  2. Next screen will say Here is your Education Summary
  3. Here there is a category that says, other education expenses (for all schools)
  4. While you are in this section, you need to edit out Box 5 and put the tuition/fees in the proper Box.  Box i is usuually where these are recorded. Make sure if Box 5 is blank, don't include any amount in Box 5.

suggest making sure that those out of pocket tuition and fees were REQUIRED by the school.  A good example would be books that were required for classes that were not purchased through the university.  Parking fees would not be a required fee as another example.
