To clarify, did you enter Form 1098-T and if YES, what numbers were in Box 1 and Box 5?
Yes. As stated, Box 5 was the Scholarship ($20,000) and Box 1 was Tuition.
The screen that says "Can't claim educ. tax break because "Scholarships, grants, & other tax free assistance exceed education expenses" usually also lists other possible reasons why you don't qualify, e,g, income too high.
If you are eligible, you have answered something wrong, in the interview. But, a lot of people are just not eligible. See
