No, you cannot claim a 2018 form 1098-T on your 2019 tax return.
If for some reason, you did not claim it in 2018, you'll need to amend your 2018 tax return to claim it now.
Please follow the instructions in this TurboTax Help topic to amend your 2018 tax return.
I have tried to amend my 2018 to have it reflect the extended Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019 that was passed at the end of December 2019. The tuition deduction that expired at the end of 2017 was just retroactively applied to the missed deduction in 2018.
However, when I try to amend my 2018 return, it gives me the same answers it did when I originally filed it. As I spent around $30K on tuition in 2018, I feel like that the "no net qualified expenses" answer it gives me really doesn't make sense.
Can anyone confirm that Turbo Tax has been updated to allow for the claiming of tuition deductions for amended 2018 returns?
Her is the official word on that:
TurboTax Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019
This is dated 01/30/2020
