Can I claim myself as supporting myself if parent refuses to claim me as a full time college student?

If my parent moved away and refuses to claim me on their taxes as dependent what do I do?

It depends. Only one taxpayer is allowed to claim a dependent such as you as a child and/or student, under the age of 24. However if you are considered independent then your parents would not be allowed to claim you as a dependent. It's not a choice between you.

Key Factor: If you have provided more than half of your own support then you are allowed to file independently. And you do not have to indicate a parent is claiming you as a dependent. You can look at the worksheet provided below to see if you actually do provide more than half of your own support and  you can include student loan funds used in 2024 (you are responsible for paying them back if you have any).
