Can I claim being a student since I’ve been in student status in the marine corps for the last 6 months and still will be for a few more months?

Q. Can I claim being a student since I’ve been in student status in the marine corps for the last 6 months?

A.  No. Being trained is part of your military job, not school for tax purposes. Even West Point cadets are not students.

One tax issue that may apply: while you are in training and have not arrived at you permanent duty station, you are considered temporarily absent from your home. If that is also your parent's home, you are considered as still living with them. So, a person who   graduates high school in May, then goes to basic training or other military training/school can still be considered a "Qualifying Child" dependent.
