Can i claim an offset for student loans in 2017 on my 2018 return and if so, how?

You won't be able to claim anything related to the offset itself as it paid a personal expense.  However, if a portion of offset went to pay the interest associated with the student loan (and it likely did), then you may be able to claim a student loan interest deduction based on the payment.  

Now, you will need to inquire with your lender or whoever is handling your student loan as to the exact amount that went towards the interest paid and get some documentation of it and this could prove difficult if your loan is in default.  But, the interest would be deductible if you can find the appropriate information.
