Books and materials not required to be purchased from the school

I want to add an extra 1500. I spent alot of money outside of school but the federal refund won't increase the American Opportunity. I should get 2500 Federal refund. What is wrong?

The full credit amount a tax payer can receive by claiming the American Opportunity Credit is $2,500, however only $1,000 of the credit is refundable (directly increases your refund). Please view the IRS link below, for more information about the refundable limit.
