Answers to questions regarding College Student Information are not reflected in the forms that TurboTax Generates. Is this a bug?

I am attempting to file my daughter's (dependent in college) taxes.  I am answering the questions in the easy step process regarding:

  • Did the student complete 4 years of post secondary education as of 1/1/2025?
  • Was this student enrolled at an eligible education institution?
  • Was this student enrolled in a program that leads to a degree, certificate, or credentials?
  • etc.

The only answer that is propagated on to the sheet - Person on Return is the first question, no other answers are being carried forward.  I am seeing this problem in other areas as well with my own form.  Please advise if I am to over ride the software and manually answer the questions in the forms or is there another approach to justify my paying Intuit for the software year after year?

If your daughter is still your dependent, and you marked that she was a dependent on another return, she will not be able to claim the education credit on her return.  If she is your dependent, you will need to claim her education expenses on your return.

To enter your education expenses in TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. Login to your account
  2. Go to Tax Home and then Deductions & Credits
  3. Scroll down to Education Credits, select Edit

Go through all the questions, one wrong answer could have disqualified you from the credit.  For more information on education credits and their requirements see the TurboTax help article:

Unfortunately - you are not answering the question posed - which is why are the answers that I provide in the easystep sequence not reflected in the forms?

Q. Why are the answers that I provide in the easy step sequence not reflected in the forms?

A. As a dependent, she is not eligible for the education credit.  As such, form 8863 is not submitted.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish by trying to enter her education info on her return?

Here's a post on the five main points on the  1098-T:

You appear to be focused on the outcome regarding what and how much credit is being recognized.  I as the signer of the tax return am focused on ensuring the accuracy of the return in addition to the result.

My question remains why is data that I submit via the TurboTax EasyStep interview process not accurately reflected in the forms that TurboTax creates?

What form(s)?  In your situation, there is usually no education form sent to the IRS.  TurboTax "Worksheets" are not sent to the IRS.
