Am I eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit for my 1st year of graduate school if I completed my bachelor's degree in 2008 but only took 3 years to do so?

  • I completed my bachelor's degree in 2008
  • I only completed 3 years worth of college credit while at university; the remaining year was AP credit taken at my high school.

No, unfortunately, you can only claim the American Opportunity Credit for classes that lead to a Bachelor's degree.  Once you have your Bachelor's degree, you cannot claim the AOC.  You may still qualify for the Lifelong Learning Credit.
