Why did my tax liability increase after the check at the end asked me to fill out Box 5, Schedule A for my 2017 return?

Answering that question allows TurboTax to determine whether your 2017 tax refund is taxable. So by answering the question, the state refund is now being included in your income. Unfortunately, this is correct and the lower amount is right.
