The instructions for Form 1041 state that estimated taxes aren't required for "A trust that was treated as owned by the decedent if the trust will receive the residue of the decedent's estate under the will ... for any tax year ending before the date that is 2 years after the decedent's death." I am preparing a return for such a trust for the same year as the decedent's death. Turbotax Business is showing a penalty not having enough withheld in the year of death. I can request a waiver of any penalty on Form 2210, but is there any way to get Turbotax not to show a penalty per the instructions or to provide an explanation for why a waiver is requested on Form 2210?

Can't you attach a statement that the trust doesn't have an estimated tax requirement due to IRC section 6654(l)(2)((B)?
Thanks. I thought of that, but was hoping Turbotax had some hidden built-in way to apply that provision so I could file electronically. In order to attach an explanation, I will have to file by mail.
Unfortunately when attaching an explanation or request for waiver the system requires that you print and mail the return. You may be able to remove the penalty if you use the desktop program prior to mailing in the return.
