I took a winter class (January 2-23) that required a laptop, do I add the cost of it to my taxes this year or file it next year?

I have a scholarship that will pay off the tuition for the class at the end of my spring semester, but I am confused as to when I can claim the laptop as I do not fully understand the American Opportunity Tax Credit

The purchase of a laptop can be included as Qualified education expenses for the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC).

If you paid for the laptop in 2018, then you can claim it in 2018. If you only paid for it in 2019, then you can only claim it on your next year's tax return, provided you have claimed the AOTC less than 4 times.
