If you haven't yet filed your return, you can go back in and make the change.

If you've already filed, first check your Schedule A, line 4 to see if you were able to take any of your expenses.  [You can only deduct the expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.] Also check to see if your itemized deductions were higher than the standard deduction.

On Schedule A:

  • If line 4 is zero.  You don't have to do anything.
  • If line 4 is not zero, then you need to amend your return
  • If line 17 is less than the standard deduction for your filing status [see list below], you don't have to do anything.
  • If line 17 is greater than the standard deduction, amend your return.

The standard deduction is:

  • $12,200 if filing single or married filing separately;
  • $24,400 if married filing jointly;
  • $18,350 if head of household.
