I owned a sole proprietorship last year, but had no income. Am I required to file as self-employed or can I opt to file normally?
I did have expenses related to the business, but I don't think it is worth the effort to work up a Profit/Loss statement.

If you had no income from self-employment, you are not required to file the form.
