I'm wondering how I should file when I'm mainly W-2, but I have one small gig of 1099 that I actually did not earn much for 2017. Do I still need file self-employed? :(

If you only have 1099-MISC income without any expenses and Box 7 has an amount in it, you can use TurboTax Deluxe or Premier online versions (depending on your tax situation) to enter that along with your W-2.

But if you have expenses you need to enter for that 1099-MISC, you will need Self-Employed or higher version online to enter those. The Schedule C that supports expenses is only in the Self-Employed or higher online version.

A 1099-MISC often but not always relates to self-employment income.
  • For 1099-MISC, having an amount appear in Box 7 is a good indicator that it's a self-employment 1099-MISC.
The other option would be to use the CD/Download desktop product if you have both income and expenses to enter. If so, you can use any version of the desktop product to enter that information along with your W-2. You can find desktop versions here TurboTax CD/Download software
