I have some consulting income from companies based outside the US (i.e. they don't give out 1099s). Where should I report this?

I am assuming you were physically working inside the US?  If so, you can simply report this as self-employment income like you would for any other consulting income you have.

To enter your self-employment income select the following:

  1. Federal
  2. Income and Expenses
  3. Show More next to Self-Employment
  4. Start next to Self-Employment
  5. Yes, to you have any self-employment income or expenses
  6. Enter the type of self-employment work you do and you can select that you use your name for your business
  7. Click through a few more screens and you will get to a screen that says "Your XX info"
  8. Click Looks good
  9. Then you will come to a screen that says Let's enter the income for your business.  It will give you the option of 1099-NEC or Other self-employed income including the 1099K , cash and checks.  Here is where you will enter your 1099
  10. If you do not select one, it will not let you enter your income
  11. Enter your self-employment income on the next screen
  12. Continue and on the next screen click add expenses

* Please note navigation may differ slightly depending on which version of TurboTax you are using*

If you were outside of the US while you earned this income, then you would report it as foreign earned income by selecting the following:

  1. Federal
  2. Income and Expenses
  3. Scroll down and click Show More next to Less Common Income
  4. Click Start next to Foreign Earned Income and Exclusions
  5. Enter your foreign Earned Income
  6. Here you will be able to decide if you are eligible or want to take the earned income exclusion or deduction

Thank you for this comment. It is helpful as I am in a similar situation.

The consulting work I did was also subject to local withholding taxes. I believe I should be able to claim some foreign tax credit for this withheld income. However, when I try and file form 1116, it appears only to apply to income coming from 1099-DIV or 1099-INT, and I cannot see how to enter taxes that were deducted from consulting contracts. Any tips for how to handle that? Thank you!

After you complete the section regarding the dividends and interest, keep scrolling through the screens.

  1. When there is a screen labeled No other income and Expenses appear, answer "no"
  2. Scroll past the first screen, and then there is a screen that says Choose the Income Type
  3. Here choose General Category Income
  4. Next screen will say country summary.  If your country is already listed, select edit. If not, you will need to add a country
  5. In the other gross income section, add the gross amount of your Self-employed income.
  6. Now Scroll through until you reach a screen labeled Foreign Taxes Paid
  7. Enter the foreign taxes paid where it's labeled Foreign Taxes on Other Income
  8. Finish out the section.

Be sure to report your Self-Employed income in the income section of your return.

Hi Dave,

Thank you your pointers. I'm not ever seeming to get to this screen. I'm using the online Do It Yourself Premium version, so I am wondering if I need to purchase a different product? Appreciate your assistance.

Premium online- deductions and credits section. Look for foreign taxes.
