I get an error from my 1099-INT, box 17 during review. box 15 shows CA, box 16 has a state id number, and 17 is blank (not 0). Do I clear 15 and 16, or place a 0 in 17?

I get an error from my 1099-INT, box 17 during review. box 15 shows CA, box 16 has a state id number, and 17 is blank (not 0). Do I clear 15 and 16, or place a 0 in 17?

If Box 17 on your Form 1099-INT is blank (not zero) and Boxes 15 and 16 show California details, don't clear Boxes 15 and 16. Instead, enter a zero (0) in Box 17 for the California state tax withheld amount. This usually resolves the error because Box 17 expects a numeric value, even if no state tax was withheld.

Make sure Boxes 15 and 16 match your state and state identification number as shown on your 1099-INT.

Thank you. The error message on the 1099-INT field 17, states: "Must be greater than $0. Or, if your form shows $0, clear boxes 15-17."

Your advice makes sense to me, but the error is confusing as adding a $0, would in prompt clearing 15-17 per the message?

Yes, you can clear all three boxes 15-17 as per the error message and that should clear the error.

See this tax tips article for more information about Form 1099-INT.

I'm getting two different answers from this posting. 1) clear 15-17, and 2) add a zero in box 17 but keep 15 and 16.

Please advise. thanks!

I concur with @MonicaK1.

If box 17 on your form 1099-INT is blank, this means that you have no state tax withheld. You can safely leave all three boxes 15, 16 and 17 blank.
