You probably already know that you can deduct things like medical and dental fees, co-pays, eyeglasses, prescriptions, lab fees, surgery, and hospital facility fees.
But did you know you can also deduct dentures, contact lens cleaning solution, hearing aid batteries, crutches, mileage to and from the doctor, and expenses for a service dog? See this IRS page on medical expenses to learn which expenses you're allowed to deduct.
Some health-related expenses cannot be claimed per IRS rules like nonprescription supplements, vitamins, over-the-counter medications, toothpaste, health club memberships, and medical marijuana (even if it's legal in your state). See this IRS list of common, but nondeductible medical expenses.
Be sure to document each medical expense you claim with receipts, credit card statements, mileage records, (etc.) and keep them with your tax records.
Tip: You can deduct the portion of medical expenses that exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for 2021.
