DO NOT FILE A 1040-X The IRS will make the correction. It will take them some time but far less time than adding a 1040-X to the mess would take to clear.
I live in a foreign country and filed my taxes mid February then a month later the check arrived. During the filing turbo tax automatically removed the 600 from my taxes I was paying. I owed more than this so it was deducted and I had the direct debit from my bank. I searched what should I do with the check because I knew that I was already compensated, Everything that was on the irs is about voiding and sending it back but this was in the meaning that I received it in error. I did not receive this in error. I was instructed from another tax forum to deposit the check, wait for clearance then correct it with a 1040-x so this became My intention then on turbo tax I tried to find a way to remove the 600 dollar stimulus from my return and pay the 600 back and could not locate a way to do this. Maybe just waiting to see what happens is not a good solution as instructed here in this forum. I understand that I did not provide this much information before hence the answer I received. Just trying to do the correct thing. Thanks
