Having trouble reporting income as a sole proprietorship

You're right, as a sole proprietor you're probably not going to receive any 1099s from your customers (and you shouldn't issue one to yourself). That's okay--you can still enter your income and expenses in TurboTax. Follow the steps below to access the Schedule C section.

  • Continue working on your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in, click Take me to my return, then click Pick up where I left off.)
  • Click My Account (top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type schedule c.
  • In the results box, highlight schedule c, then click GO.
  • You'll be asked either Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? or Did you have any income or expenses for a business in 2016? Click Yes
  • TurboTax will continue to ask questions about your self-employment (small business) income and expenses. Follow the onscreen instructions in this section to complete your Schedule C (or Schedule C-EZ).

Please note: If you are using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.

The FAQ below provides more information about Schedule C.
